YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE FALLING APART TO ASK FOR HELP
There’s a dangerous idea that a lot of us carry around:
Other people have it worse, so I should be able to handle this.
So we keep going.
We go to work. Take care of the kids. Answer messages. Pay bills. Make dinner. Laugh at memes. Show up when people need us.
And somewhere underneath all of that, we’re exhausted.
Mental health struggles don’t always look like someone completely falling apart.
Sometimes they look like functioning while everything inside you feels like chaos.
Sometimes they look like irritability, isolation, losing interest in things you normally enjoy, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, or struggling just to accomplish things that used to feel normal. NIMH recommends considering professional help when severe or distressing symptoms persist for two weeks or longer.
YOU ARE ALLOWED TO SAY, “I’M NOT DOING GREAT.”
You don’t need the perfect explanation.
You don’t need a diagnosis first.
You don’t need permission.
You can start with four words:
“I haven’t been okay.”
Tell someone you trust.
Tell your doctor.
Talk with a therapist or another qualified mental health professional.
If you don’t know where to begin, even your primary-care provider can be a starting point. NIMH specifically recommends talking with a primary-care provider about mental-health concerns; they can help evaluate what you’re experiencing and refer you to appropriate care.
SMALL THINGS STILL COUNT
Getting help doesn’t mean everything changes overnight.
While you’re figuring out the bigger pieces, basic things can still matter: regular sleep, movement, eating regularly, staying hydrated, reducing things that make you feel worse, doing something relaxing, and staying connected to people who support you.
They’re not magic cures, and they don’t replace treatment when treatment is needed.
They’re ways of taking care of yourself while you keep moving forward.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO EARN SUPPORT
You don’t have to reach rock bottom.
You don’t have to prove you’re hurting badly enough.
You don’t have to compare your pain to somebody else’s.
If something is affecting your ability to live your life, it matters.
Speak up before the whisper becomes a scream.
And if today is hard?
Make it through today.
Then we’ll worry about tomorrow.
Throw It On. Stand Your Ground. Wear Your Attitude.
