CHECK ON THE STRONG FRIEND
You know the one.
The person everybody calls.
The fixer.
The listener.
The mom who somehow keeps everything moving.
The friend answering messages at 2 a.m.
The person cracking jokes while everybody else is falling apart.
The one who says:
“I’m good.”
Check on that person too.
STRUGGLING DOESN’T ALWAYS LOOK LIKE STRUGGLING
Mental-health difficulties can show up in different ways.
For women, NIMH lists possible signs that can include persistent sadness or hopelessness, excessive worry, changes in sleep, appetite or energy, irritability, withdrawal, difficulty functioning at work or home, and thoughts of death or suicide.
Someone doesn’t have to look devastated to be having a terrible time.
And that’s why connection matters.
DON’T JUST SAY “LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ANYTHING.”
Try something more direct.
“How are you really doing?”
“You don’t seem like yourself lately. Want to talk?”
“You don’t have to explain anything. I just wanted you to know I’m here.”
Then listen.
You don’t have to fix everything.
You don’t need the perfect advice.
Sometimes your job is simply to make sure somebody knows they aren’t invisible.
PAY ATTENTION WHEN SOMETHING CHANGES
Certain changes deserve particular attention, especially when they’re new, increasing, or connected to a painful event or loss.
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline identifies warning signs including talking about wanting to die, expressing hopelessness or feeling like a burden, withdrawing or isolating, major sleep changes, increased alcohol or drug use, reckless behavior, extreme mood swings, or talking about unbearable pain.
Don’t treat statements about suicide like attention-seeking.
Take them seriously.
WE DON’T LEAVE OUR PEOPLE BEHIND
One of the things we want the Bitch Nation community to become is a place where saying:
“I’m having a really shitty day.”
doesn’t get you judged.
It gets you heard.
Where asking for help isn’t weakness.
Where somebody notices when you’ve gone quiet.
Where we celebrate the person who’s thriving—and sit beside the person who’s barely hanging on.
Because sometimes strength isn’t standing alone.
Sometimes strength is finally letting somebody stand beside you.
CHECK ON YOUR PEOPLE.
And while you’re doing that?
Check on yourself too.
You matter just as much as everybody you’ve been trying to save.
